CBI Survey says the lack of basic skills hits businesses

If low literacy and bad numeracy are so rife why are businesses reluctant to employ freelance professional proofreading services?
In this day and age of quick and easy communication (mobile phones to ask "are you free now"; emailing to send documents) businesses can ensure basic accuracy without too much loss of time.
I'd say pride and lack of organisation are probably the biggest blocks - although many will hide behind lack of budget. However, clear and accurate copy has got to be worth a few pence, whilst illiteracy must lose businesses millions!
All the more reason to push the form on my website that allows for easy transfer of documents for proofing and editing - roll on the research that proves there is a need for that sort of service.

National Year of Reading

I'm grateful to have been able to make a contribution to this event, thanks to Drum at Southgate Publishers and actor Edmund Pegge. It is quite different from the usual run of dressing up to a theme or having an author visit a library or school. It is about that most important start to reading - being read to.

Being read to is a memory given to me by my mother and passed on to my children and it is a memory I would wish for every person on this earth. That warm, fun and loving moment between caring adult and developing child is a basic building block to any future.

The key is not to get precious about what you read but to make sure you enjoy the whole experience on a regular basis. That is what we've created - a little booklet of tips and techniques called How to Enjoy Reading Aloud to young children. Various literacy professionals said it couldn't be done but sales of thousands to libraries, schools and early years centres round the United Kingdom say otherwise - such a delicious experience.

Getting started

I never managed to keep a diary going for more than a few weeks so let's see how long I manage to keep up this blog!
Aims:
  • clarity: accurate spelling; clear points made
  • communication and contact
Fears:
  • absurdity
  • no reactions
So here's to the learning curve in the blogosphere!
